  • That depends on your priorities. We know that having a shared identity, such as working with a lesbian therapist, can be very helpful. But perhaps your orientation isn’t the most salient part of your identity. Maybe the most salient part of your identity is being someone with chronic illness, or a person recovering from religious trauma. It would be impossible to find a therapist who shares all your intersections of identity. If you feel strongly about working with an LGBT therapist, you deserve to find that great fit. But if your primary concern is processing trauma, a straight therapist who has years of experience working with LGBT people could be the best fit.
